Mundaka IPA

A quick google of the name 'Mundaka' tells me that this is a beer from Italy that is named after a small town in the Basque Country, Northern Spain. It's also the name of an obscure Spanish footballer who plies his trade in the Spanish 4th division, but the surfing analogy is much more interesting. Sorry, Carlos.

mundaka can and pour

Having achieved international acclaim as a destination for surfing holidays due to its position on a river mouth that creates some of the best waves in Europe, Mundaka seems to have nothing at all to do with beer, brewing or Italy.

We can only surmise that the brewers at CR/AK have a particular fondness for hanging ten, or lower-league Spanish football, and decided to make a beer named accordingly.

Either way, this session IPA was good enough to win CR/AK Italian Beer of the Year awards in the session IPA category in 2016, 2018 and 2022 so whatever it's named after, it's good.

Mundaka IPA - Taste Test

The aroma is heavily hopped, which makes it seem like it's going to be a lot stronger in flavour than it actually turns out to be. The pour is much more like a session IPA though, with a light colour and a light, fluffy white head that gives it a great aesthetic.

There's a maltiness to it initially but this soon gives way to delicate flavours of fruit. The descriptions reckon it's all pineapple, mango and lemon but for me it's more of a general fruitiness that leans towards the citrus without being too obvious.

A little grassiness from the hops balance it well and the slight bitterness they bring also help to level it out, with a touch of dryness into the aftertaste that makes it deliciously morish.

Mundaka IPA - Can Notes

I am a Sheffield Wednesday fan so these colours appeal to me hugely, the blue and white stripes or hoops help to make this a very visually striking can design, even though it is in essence quite a simple style.

The back of the can includes the information about the beer in both Italian and English, which is incredibly helpful for a monoglot like me. The slash that's associated with the brewery helps to break up all the information a little and make it easier to digest.
