Did I enjoy this lemon sour, brewed with lactose and sugar to give it a creamy, lemon-milkshake style flavour? I did indeed...very much so.
Not known for it's prominence in milkshake but more for sourness, I was surprised at how sweet and creamy this one was. I expected a face-crushingly sour beer that i'd need to sip, but this is much more subtle.
Pomona Island have really knocked it out of the park with this one, which makes the old-school tennis racquet on the label quite an appropriate design.
as soon as you pop the can you know there's something a little different about this one. It says on the can how it's made with lactose and sugar, but I didn't expect the creamy and sweet flavour to be so prominent, especially ahead of the lemon.
It's quite synthetic, very similar to a milkshake aroma which gets stronger as you pour it out into the glass. The initial taste is very sharp and lemony but that quickly develops into a more subtle sourness that, while still very much lemon, allows the creamy sweetness to come to the fore.
It's quite thick bodied, but not enough to stop it having a crisp, sharp finish that you would expect from a sour. The lemon flavour runs right through to the aftertaste but is much subtler than expected, in a very pleasant way.
You would expect it to be yellow, wouldn't you? It feels like it should be yellow, lemons being yellow and all. But the vivid blue background works great with the yellow writing and image, which somehow fits a lot more than I think yellow with blue writing would.
Pomona Island's can designs are quite simple, but very effective. The images aren't always (hardly ever, in fact) associated with what's in the can, but does give an element of intrigue.
The bold colours are excellent and make this one, in particular, stand out on the shelf. What a tennis racquet has to do with lemons, i'm not quite sure. Something about summer, sun and lemonade, probably.
